This Intermediate Level course discusses the different types of liver biopsy, pre-biopsy testing, pros & cons of performing a biopsy, and techniques when performing the biopsy.

At the completion of this course the reader will be able to:

1. Compare and contrast the different types of liver biopsy.
2. List the testing and other factors that should be considered before a biopsy is performed.
3. List disease states under which a biopsy may be performed and explain what information would be obtained for each disease.
4. Recall what blood testing should be performed within 24 hours of the liver biopsy.
5. Explain how the patient is prepared for the biopsy.
