This course reviews Hemostasis and basic Blood Coagulation, by reviewing both intrinsic & extrinsic pathways, and the fibrinolysis system. Basic laboratory testing is discussed, as well as, common hemostatic disorders.

At the completion of this course the reader will be able to:

1. Summarize the process of blood coagulation, from primary coagulation through secondary coagulation and fibrinolysis.
2. Apply knowledge of hemostasis physiology to understand the principle behind common laboratory coagulation assays.
3. Distinguish between laboratory coagulation assays to determine their appropriateness in monitoring various anticoagulant medications used in the medical management of patients.
4. Discuss the major natural inhibitor pathways of coagulation initiation.
5. Diagnose basic disorders of hemostasis given commonly used laboratory assay values.
