This Basic Course discusses the 3 phases of laboratory testing: Preanalytical, Analytical, and Postanalytical phases and the types of errors that can occur during each phase of the testing process. It reviews how errors can be made during ordering, collection, transport, storage, and reporting, as well as, mechanical and human error.

At the completion of this course the reader will be able to:

  2. Discuss the importance of proper specimen ordering, collection, transport, and storage during the Preanalytical phase.
  3. Discuss the human and mechanical errors that can happen during the Analytical phase of the testing process.

  5. Recall the importance of up to date procedure manuals and adequate staff training.
